Morning Wellness Latte

My morning go-to over the years have ranged from apple cider vinegar recipes to warm lemon water because they both have so many health benefits. Recently, I thought, why not combine them, with the addition of a few other superfoods?

The combination of ingredients really makes it beneficial to overall health from digestion to healthy skin, all while strengthening the immune system, perfect for flu season!

Health Benefits

Lemon Water – increases the metabolism, detoxifies, clears skin, improves digestion

Apple Cider Vinegar – reduces sugar cravings, strengthens the immune system, aids in digestion

Turmeric – helps joint & muscle health, strengths the immune system, promotes glowing skin

Ginger – relieves heartburn, fights infections, clears skin

Cayenne – boots metabolism, detoxifies,

great source of Vitamin E (anti-aging!)

Don’t get me wrong, this drink definitely has an acquired taste, especially if you aren’t used to using any of the ingredients. You can adjust the spices according to your liking, or start out slowly adding ingredients. I look forward to it for a little morning relaxation to start the day!

Morning Wellness Latte

  • 10 oz boiling water
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 TBSP ACV
  • 1 dash Turmeric
  • 1 shake Cayenne
  • 3 shakes Ginger

I’d love to hear your morning go-to drink, or if you’ve tried something similar to this one!

2018

It feels so good to be back with a new post! Blogging is truly my passion, and I can’t wait to share so much with you!

2017 was my best year yet, after starting a new business venture, which rippled into countless positive changes. It’s easy to lose yourself after becoming a new mom, and it was just what I needed to find myself again, and really be able to utilize my creativity, while joining an amazing tribe of women. Not to mention, it’s drastically changed my skin!

My goals for 2018 are simplifying any area that I can. Instead of spending time searching for a new workout to do each day and creating a weekly schedule, I joined an app/program takes out all the guess work, and is ready with an alarm each morning. Drinking more water, because I simply forget throughout the day, is another, so I purchased a 1 L water bottle. I only have to fill up twice, and I know I met my water intake goal for the day, no more counting and guessing! Time management is something I’ve never excelled at, so I purchased an hourly planner, to stay on track and break down each day and set a schedule. Organization was what I lived by in college, and post-kids it’s hard to come by, so decluttering is key to begin reorganizing everything from my closet to cabinets. I’m Marie Kondo-ing our house right now. Her IG is goals. I’m excited to share everything with you along the way, and have the time to share what I love, and what works (the reason I started my blog!) Here’s to an even better year, thanks for following along!

Health & Fitness Tips

health & fitness tips | TheSubtleStatement.com | #21dayfix #21dayfixextreme

Health & Fitness have always been a huge part of my adult life, but since I started coaching, it has become my life. These are tips I live by, and share with my challengers daily to stay on track and stay motivated.

1. Drink warm lemon water upon waking up every morning. This helps with firing up your metabolism and detoxing your system, losing fat and improving digestion.

2. Stick to a portion controlled meal plan. Once you learn how much food and the portion of it you should be eating daily, you can learn to fit in your favorite foods and meals without overindulging. (The programs I use have been a lifestyle change for me, you can find the 21 Day Fix & 21 Day Fix Extreme here)

3. Make a weekly menu & stick to buying only what you need for it. This helps you stay on track, without snacking on bad foods, and also helps not to overspend at the grocery store.

4. Prep your food. Wash & cut up fresh fruits & veggies, and make them easily accessible for snacking or to grab & go. Make a big serving of homemade hummus or guac for the week, or brown rice or quinoa to add to your dinners.

5. Drink a protein packed, vitamin filled, superfood shake for breakfast daily. Vegan Chocolate Shakeology keeps me full, nixes any junk food cravings (it tastes just like dessert!) and gives me all of my vitamins, and nutrients for the day.

6. Complete one 30 minute workout per day, from toning, to pilates to yoga. I used to spend two hours at the gym doing cardio, and it never transformed my body like these 30 minute at home workouts have, with minimal cardio.

7. Stay hydrated throughout the day. This is crucial to weight loss and staying healthy. Shoot for drinking half your weight in ounces for the day.

8. Dry brushing before showering. This helps detoxify the body, improves circulation, tightens skin, exfoliates, and reduces the appearance of cellulite.

9. If you get hungry after dinner, drink a cup of decaffeinated tea. Cinnamon, peppermint, rooibos, pick your fave.

10. Never underestimate the power of weights, to tone your body and transform it (not bulk you up.) I’ve had much quicker results with my body becoming smaller and more fit and toned, than with any type of cardio.

11. Throw away the scale. Setting a goal to lose “x” pounds, can be discouraging, because sometimes your body is reaching non-scale victories much quicker. You may be losing inches, or pants sizes and not realize it because you are too stuck on the number on the scale.

12. Take before pictures. This isn’t for sharing, but sometimes you rely on seeing little differences, and you don’t see the big picture until you compare yourself to a picture of when you started. A photo can show a lot more than the scale can.

13. With each food & fitness choice, ask yourself, “Will this choice bring me closer to my goal?” This has been life changing. Results don’t come immediately. Take everything step by step. By making decisions based on your goals, each choice will be one step closer to getting you there.

14. Check in to keep yourself accountable. I encourage my challengers to check in with their workout & meal plan for the day at the end of the day in our online challenge group to keep themselves accountable. If you know you have to share your food and fitness choices with others at the end of the day, it may help you make healthier choices.

Starting Over

In December 2012, I was preparing for my best friend’s wedding. I stuck to doing my at home workouts by running on the treadmill and a few toning exercises and sticking to my antioxidant filled vegan, gluten-free diet. No cheat days, just sticking to my strict regimen. A month prior I had also started a new birth control pill, being that the one I was on prior to that was highly publicized for to risk of blood clots. On vacation at the end of December, I noticed a change in my body. I had stuck to my normal healthy meals during the holidays so it couldn’t have been holiday bloat. So I started on a more intense meal plan and added spinning to my exercise regimen 6 days per week.

From December to February I had gained 20 pounds. I was devastated and could not figure out the reason why, even going to the doctor and getting tests ran without any answers. Finally, in May I had realized the only thing that had changed was the pill that I switched to. I then started to Google, finding horror stories of rapid weight gain in small time spans and became horrified that I had been taking it for the previous 8 months. I immediately stopped and so did the weight gain… But after trying everything imaginable with diet and exercise nothing would take it off. After a year of working out intensely and sticking to a strict diet and nothing happening I gave up. I started adapting my then fiancé’s l, now husband’s last night dinner habits because of his work schedule and began indulging in whatever vegan foods sounded good without any portion control. Over the course of another year I eventually gained 15 more pounds, making me completely miserable and effecting every part of my life. I stopped the thing I was most passionate about, my blog.

I no longer could take a mass amount of photos to create style posts without cringing. I refused to buy clothes in a new size because I didn’t want to get “comfortable” looking the way I did, so I resorted to Lululemon leggings and oversized sweaters (you know that is not my “style.”)

I tried doing “low carb” or “no starches” but it would only last a couple days and I would be starving. In July 2014, I decided to purchase the 21 Day Fix and Shakeology. I loved the meal plan but never decided to get serious and go full force until January 5, 2015. In the first 21 days, I saw an enormous difference in everything from the way my body looked, to the way I felt. I had so much more energy, I was always full, and ate a variety of nutrients each day with recipes that were actually delicious.

From the first round, I kept going. This became a lifestyle. It taught me how to eat, what to eat and how much of it. All of the tools I needed to know exactly what my body required, and one 30 minute workout per day.

Prior to this I was eating less (but not so healthy foods) and working out more, I would have never imagined eating more and working out less would actually be the solution to losing weight and getting fit again. After the first round I didn’t see any pounds lost again for a while, I assumed I was just maintaining at this point, until I tried on dresses in April for a trip to Florida, that I had previously tried on in February for a trip to Las Vegas that at the time didn’t fit, I was amazed at the difference in how great they fit now without losing actual “pounds.” The entire time I had been losing inches and gaining muscle. Non-scale victories are much more beneficial! They tell you way more than the scale.

This program changed my life in so many ways. I’ve gained more confidence in feeling like myself again, being able to wear all of my old skinny jeans and clothes again is the best feeling ever, feeling fit and not bloated is amazing and I was able to go down two sizes in my wedding dress from the time I purchased it until my first fitting. A week into the program I decided to start coaching and creating challenge groups with recipes, meal plans and grocery lists for groups of people wanting to get healthy and change their lives. I’ve always had a passion for fitness and nutrition, as I always posted recipes and health benefits of my favorite foods on here, but it made me so happy to be able to use that passion and help others who were in the same position I was once in. I’ve helped so many family members and friends (including my husband who loved junk food and now is obsessed with Vegan Chocolate Shakeology.)

A revamp of The Subtle Statement was much needed to start over, now that I’ve started over and I’ve gained back everything to continue my passion of my blog again. It was never easy to share my story and why I stopped posting, but now the most important thing is knowing that someone else may be in the shoes I was in and this post may be a life changer for them too. If you have any questions about the meal plan and workouts and the program itself, feel free to email me, I love sharing information about it because it has been such a life changer for me. I look forward to sharing my favorite fix approved recipes, which I also have included so many already on my fitness page Facebook.com/fashion.meets.fit

Broiled Grapefruit

If you aren’t a fan of grapefruit, after trying this recipe you might just become one. I love grapefruit, but this version is the right amount of sweetness/tanginess.

  • 1/2 packet of Stevia
  • 1/2 Grapefruit

Sprinkle grapefruit with stevia, and place in oven/toaster oven. Broil at a high temperature for 8-10 minutes.

Calories: 41

Health benefits of grapefruit include a great source of antioxidants, lowers cholesterol, increases metabolic rate, and it’s high in fiber.
